Milton I. Wick
Milton I. Wick, the 1922 NU graduate who issued a $500,000 challenge gift in December 1978 for construction of the Wick Alumni Center, was the proverbial “newspaperman’s newspaperman.” Born in South Dakota and educated in Minnesota and Nebraska, Wick started his career as a salesman but turned to the publishing business in 1926. He went on to own and operate more than 50 daily and weekly newspapers in Arizona, Minnesota and 11 other states. In the 1950s, Milt and his brother, Jim, established the “Wick Editors and Commentators Tours” of Europe, North Africa and the Near East to give editors firsthand observations of those areas. Milt was the first American journalist to tour and report from the Soviet Union beyond Moscow. Wick also had a long history of involvement with the Nebraska Alumni Association. He received the Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1967 and served several terms on the board of directors from 1965 until his death in 1981. He was the alumni board’s first director emeritus. The Wick Alumni Center opened in 1985.
